Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

LOVE-loved this book, much to my surprise given its paperback popularity on Target shelves and my resistance to the suddenly trendy genre of ironic literary mashups ignited by "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." The same author Seth Grahame-Smith also devised "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," a title whose premise needs nothing more. It was only the revisionist history beach read of 2010, you guys - Duh! Adapting such ripe entertainment for the big screen was a no-brainer, but the material is such that the choice of director could make or break the thing depending on editorial control.

So I've been cautiously excited to see what visual aesthetic would be interpreted by producer Tim Burton, whose recent string of fairy tale tentpoles has left a Disney-shaped skid mark all over street cred, and director Timur Bekmambetov, the Russian wunderkind who delivered a huge Hollywood hit with the execrable Angelina Jolie/slo-mo gunfights clusterfuck "Wanted."

Instead of some entirely synergized cross between Hot Topic princess baby shit "Alice in Wonderland" / the insufferably A.D.D. abomination of "Sherlock Holmes," it appears that the ghost of Tim Burton past, the one who spun a richly textured gothic "Sleepy Hollow" into studio gold, has re-apparated in a mentor capacity to guide the resurrection of Honest Abe as a summer movie action hero, leaving the vigilante bloodlust up to the young buck while micromanaging the craft and technical details like old Tim Burton used to. Sinister baroque interiors, assured use of silhouette & shadow, moonlit mist, etc.

Safe to say now I am firmly on board with the movie version kicking just as much Confederate vampire ass as its source material. This first trailer, an epic condensed into a propulsive minute-long tease that pulses with the unprecedented confidence of revisionist superhero history, is a damn good first impression. Bloody axe + tophat, June 22.
