Topaz is the official birthstone for the month of November so here's some topaz trivia for you. Did you know that some of the largest faceted gemstones in the world are topaz?
The El-Dorado Topaz, which weighs 31,000 carats currently holds the record for the largest faceted gemstone in the world. Discovered in 1984 in Brazil, the uncut crystal tipped the scales at 81.57 pounds. Over 80 percent of its weight was lost in cutting to yield a perfect emerald cut with a yellow-brownish color.
The El-Dorado Topaz is currently part of the Special Exhibitions Gem Collection of the Programa Royal Collections Group, based in Madrid Spain.
The American Golden Topaz, which is housed in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D. C., is the world's third largest faceted gemstone at 22,892.5 carats - that's just a bit over 10 pounds! The cut stone has 172 facets and is a brilliant honey-gold color.
Like the El-Dorado Topaz, it was discovered in Brazil. Topaz is also mined in Mexico, Sri Lanka, Africa and China.
